What people use it for

WebM is what screen recorders and browsers hand you, but a lot of apps, sites and editors will not take it. Here are the common reasons people convert a WebM to MP4.

Share an OBS recording

OBS and most browser screen recorders save VP9 WebM by default. Convert it to MP4 so you can hand it to a coworker or post it without anyone having to install a codec to play it.

Post a clip to Discord

Discord plays MP4 inline but treats many WebM files as a plain attachment with no preview. Convert first, then trim or compress to fit under the 10 MB upload cap on a free server.

Upload where WebM is rejected

Some upload forms, course platforms and job application portals only accept MP4 and bounce a WebM. An H.264 MP4 clears those checks.

Open it in a video editor

Premiere, iMovie and CapCut often choke on WebM or import it without sound. An MP4 drops straight onto the timeline so you can cut it like any other clip.

Play it on an iPhone

Tap a WebM on an iPhone and it usually will not open in the Photos app or Messages. MP4 with H.264 plays natively, so the clip just works once you AirDrop or text it over.

Keep it for the long run

WebM support comes and goes between apps and devices. Saving a master copy as MP4 means the recording still opens years from now, on whatever you happen to be using.
